Hydrotherapy is the use of warm water to relieve discomfort and promote physical wellbeing. Water increases resistance and helps to support the patient, making it ideal for rehabilitation, general fitness, weight loss & training.
Swimming in warm water supports the body and movement, and provides many therapeutic benefits including relaxation. Speed and technique are controlled by the hydrotherapist depending on your pet’s needs.
Hydrotherapy can help your pet by enhancing range of movement and flexibility, strengthening muscles, building stamina and promoting wellbeing. Water amplifies exercise benefits due to the added resistance, making it ideal for pets on a weight-loss or fitness programme.
Hydrotherapy plays an important role in rehabilitating many conditions we frequently see in small animals including obesity, arthritis and hip dysplasia. It can also support postoperative recovery and a return to health following illness.
For our rehabilitative sessions we allow for plenty of time to work at the animal’s pace and abilities with no pressures and stresses. Our expert therapists will work with you and your Vet to tailor a specific programme with scientifically proven hydrotherapy treatments.
The most effective forms of rehabilitation tend to be a combination of physiotherapy followed by hydrotherapy. Typically physiotherapy sessions fade off to start with leaving hydrotherapy sessions to drive muscle development, strength and flexibility.
Hydrotherapy is particularly useful in the rehabilitation of Cruciate Ligament Disease or Injury, Hip Dysplasia and Elbow Dysplasia.
Typically post surgical Orthopaedic Rehabilitation for these conditions will commence after 2 weeks for a period of approximately 10 weeks. Where treatment is as part of conservative management your Veterinary surgeon may recommend immediate commencement of Hydrotherapy.
Hydrotherapy is excellent for strengthening and slowing deterioration of animals with spinal conditions such as Intervertebral Disc Disease, Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) and Vestibular Disease.
We take particular control measures such as ensuring animals with spinal conditions swim straight to avoid twisting and turning during hydrotherapy. Typically hydrotherapy treatments will commence within 0 to 4 weeks depending on the recommendation from your Veterinary Surgeon.
